LITHONIA, GA (CBS46) –
An eighth grader has been taken into custody after school officials say she brought a knife to school and chased other students.
The Lithonia Middle School student was arrested Thursday.
Nicholas Mercer is a 7th grade English teacher at Lithonia Middle. He says chaos erupted on campus Thursday when one of the female students pulled out a knife and tried cutting her co-eds. Now, Mercer wants extra security measures at this Dekalb County School.
“I would love for us to implement metal detectors in the build just for the safety of the students and the teachers,” said Mercer.
Mercer says Thursday’s attempted attack is another example of how violence at the school has gotten out of control.
“With the shotgun incident there was a shotgun in the ceiling of the bathroom it wasn’t loaded but it was still a threat to students and teachers.”
DeKalb County Schools sent out a statement about the incident:
CBS46 also spoke with a football coach at the school and he tells us a lot of his athletes say they tell teachers at Lithonia Middle School about their safety concerns but that they are often ignored.
DeKalb Schools tells CBS46 no students were injured and parents have been notified.
